Arthur "AJ" Sousa was born on July 30, 1992, in Florida, USA. His earliest exposure to martial arts came through taekwondo in childhood, though the sport never took root. Through his school years, Sousa channeled his competitive drive into American football — a pursuit that suited his tenacity if not his frame. Standing 5'7" and weighing 140 pounds, he competed with determination, but by the end of his junior year, the realities of his physical build made a professional football path untenable. Rather than see the season through, Sousa made the pragmatic call to step away before it concluded.

That departure proved to be a turning point. At age 16, a close friend holding a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu invited Sousa to visit Pablo Popovitch's BJJ Centre. The visit left a lasting impression, and Sousa committed to the team shortly after — setting in motion a martial arts career defined by discipline, growth, and competitive achievement.

Sousa's foundational development at Pablo Popovitch's BJJ Centre was shaped primarily by Vagner Rocha, widely known in the BJJ community by his nickname "Ceará." Rocha served as Sousa's principal instructor through the early stages of his training, awarding him both his blue and purple belts. The technical groundwork established under Rocha's mentorship proved essential, instilling the positional awareness and detail-oriented approach that would carry Sousa forward.

With the purple belt came a shift in instructional responsibility. Pablo Popovitch, the academy's head instructor, took over Sousa's development through the later stages of his colored belt journey, awarding him his brown belt in early 2013. The progression continued on a steady trajectory, and on June 21, 2014, Popovitch promoted Sousa to the rank of black belt — a formal recognition of his evolution into one of the sport's accomplished competitors.

Just one week after receiving his brown belt from Pablo Popovitch in early 2013, Sousa received an invitation from Lloyd Irvin to compete in the BJJ Kumite — a web series and tournament designed to identify the best brown belt competitor in the sport. The format was distinctive: bouts were filmed and released as YouTube episodes, offering participants meaningful visibility and the chance to build a following among BJJ fans worldwide.

Sousa's performances throughout the Kumite introduced him to a broader audience and established him as one of the standout brown belts of his generation. The recognition proved well-earned — later that same year, he claimed gold at the IBJJF World Championship NOGI in the brown belt division, a result that solidified his reputation as one of the most capable competitors at that level. His rise from relative newcomer to nationally recognized talent over the course of 2013 stands as one of the more compelling individual stories to emerge from the Kumite series.

The transition from competitor to head coach came when Pablo Popovitch relocated to Abu Dhabi. Sousa stepped into the leadership role at the BJJ Center, ensuring continuity for both the academy's students and its competitive program. As it became clear that Popovitch would not be returning to the United States, Sousa assumed full ownership of the facility and undertook a rebranding effort — renaming it AJ Sousa BJJ Academy to reflect both the change in leadership and the identity he had built through years of competition.

Under his stewardship, the academy became the operational base from which Sousa continued to develop athletes and sharpen his own game, operating under the AJ Sousa BJJ/GF Team banner. Throughout his competitive career, Sousa navigated both the lightweight (76kg/168lbs) and middleweight (82kg/181lbs) divisions — a testament to his physical discipline and tactical adaptability across different competitive contexts.

Open Circuit Dominance in 2015

Following his black belt promotion in June 2014, Sousa established himself as a consistent and dangerous presence on the open tournament circuit. The year 2015 marked a particularly productive stretch of his career. He captured gold at the IBJJF Dallas Open, the IBJJF Miami Open, and the IBJJF Las Vegas Spring Open — three victories across different locations that underscored his ability to perform at a high level throughout the competitive calendar. He further strengthened his résumé by winning 1st Place at the UAEJJF US Pro Nationals and claiming the BJJ Library Challenge title that same year.

Testing the World Stage

Sousa also measured himself against the sport's elite on the international stage, reaching 4th Place at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2015 — a result that placed him firmly among the top competitors in his weight class globally. His sustained activity across both the lightweight and middleweight divisions reflected not only competitive range but a commitment to remaining relevant in one of the sport's most demanding arenas.
