About this match
In the co-main event of UFC BJJ 7: Tackett vs Rocha, Lucas Valente submitted Carlos Henrique with a Straight Footlock late in round three to claim the UFC BJJ lightweight title. It was Valente's fourth consecutive victory over Henrique.
Valente opened as the aggressor, charging Henrique up the slope of the Bowl and nearly out of the competition area after an initial hand-fighting exchange. Henrique rotated away from danger and defended well when Valente looked to take his back on the mat. Henrique attempted similar charges twice but Valente used smart footwork to pivot back to the center. The first round closed with Valente working leg attacks. In round two, Valente used flying guard-pulls and leg-lock attempts to press for a finish, while Henrique handled each attempt calmly. Valente continued to push through the final minute of the round with a succession of leg-lock attempts.
In round three, Henrique slowed Valente on the ground, prompting the challenger to return to his feet. Standing, Henrique appeared to be controlling the action, and a flying armbar attempt by Henrique suggested he was edging the round and likely held the lead on the cards heading into it. However, as Henrique chased the finish, Valente escaped, quickly shifted from defense to offense, and secured the footlock just past the three-minute mark of the round to force the tap.
