X-Guard Pass

Pass

The X-Guard Pass is used when the bottom player has established X-guard, hooking one leg between yours with their legs forming an X configuration. The goal is to neutralize their off-balancing leverage, free your trapped leg, and advance to a dominant passing position such as side control or half guard top.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Lower your base and widen your stance immediately to resist the sweeping leverage of the X-guard hooks.
  • · Control the bottom player's upper body by grabbing their collar, lapel, or head to limit their hip mobility and prevent them from extending.
  • · Free your trapped leg by backstopping with pressure and peeling hooks rather than simply pulling away, which creates space they can exploit.
  • · Anticipate the technical stand-up or back-take attempt when they feel the pass coming and be ready to sprawl or crossface.
  • · Pin their hips to the mat as soon as hooks are cleared to prevent guard re-establishment.

Execution

  1. 1 Lower your hips and post your hands on their torso or grip their collar/head to stabilize your base and shut down their extension power.
  2. 2 Identify the primary hook (the leg threading between yours) and use your same-side hand to grip and peel their foot off your hip while driving your knee toward the mat.
  3. 3 Step your freed leg over or around their bottom hook, using a backstep or lateral shift to clear the second hook while maintaining chest-to-chest pressure.
  4. 4 Immediately sprawl your hips heavy onto their thighs or torso and establish a crossface or underhook to flatten them.
  5. 5 Consolidate side control or knee-on-belly by blocking their near hip with your knee and securing upper body control.

Common mistakes

  • × Standing upright to try to shake off the hooks, which gives the bottom player maximum sweeping leverage and often results in being dumped.
  • × Neglecting upper body control while focusing only on freeing the legs, allowing the bottom player to reguard or transition to single-leg attacks.
  • × Rushing past the hooks without pinning the hips, leaving enough space for the bottom player to immediately re-enter X-guard or transition to deep half guard.
