Worm Guard Sweep
Sweep
Gi only
The Worm Guard Sweep uses the lapel wrap threaded around the opponent's leg to off-balance and sweep them from open guard bottom. It capitalizes on the structural control the worm guard grip provides, limiting the opponent's ability to base or posture, making it effective when the opponent tries to stand or pass.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The lapel feed must be deep around the opponent's leg and secured tightly to eliminate slack, creating a mechanical connection between your grip and their base.
- · Off-balancing relies on combining the lapel tension with hip movement to pull the opponent's weight forward over their toes.
- · Controlling the opponent's far-side sleeve or collar prevents them from posting to recover balance during the sweep.
- · If the opponent sits back to resist the forward sweep, immediately transition to an elevator or hook sweep using the same lapel control.
- · Elevating your hips off the mat at the moment of the sweep multiplies the off-balancing force through the lapel connection.
Execution
- 1 From worm guard bottom, ensure the lapel is fed under the opponent's same-side leg and secured in your cross grip with no slack, while your feet maintain active contact on their hips or thighs.
- 2 Use your free hand to grip the opponent's far-side sleeve or collar, removing their ability to post.
- 3 Angle your hips to the side while pulling the lapel grip toward you and across, loading the opponent's weight onto their near-side knee.
- 4 Simultaneously hook behind their far leg with your free-side foot or use a butterfly hook to elevate, and bridge your hips upward to complete the sweep.
- 5 Follow the momentum to come up on top into a passing position, maintaining the lapel grip to immediately threaten a pass.
Common mistakes
- × Leaving slack in the lapel wrap, which allows the opponent to simply step out of the guard and nullifies all sweeping leverage.
- × Attempting the sweep without controlling the far-side arm, letting the opponent post a hand and easily recover their base.
- × Staying flat on the back instead of angling the hips, resulting in a weak pull that the opponent can resist by simply squatting their weight back.
