Whizzer
Counter
The whizzer (overhook) is used as a counter when your opponent secures an underhook or drives a single-leg entry that threatens your base — the classic answer from dogfight and half guard scrambles. By threading your arm over and around their underhooking arm while applying hip pressure, you neutralize their control and settle back to half guard top or a neutral clinch.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Drive your hip into the opponent's shoulder on the whizzer side to maximize leverage and kill their underhook.
- · The whizzer must be deep, wrapping tightly past their elbow to prevent them from retracting the arm.
- · Use your free hand to cross-face or control their head to prevent them from re-establishing the vaporizer angle.
- · Anticipate them pulling their arm free by maintaining constant downward shoulder pressure.
- · Your weight must stay heavy and sprawled rather than upright to deny them space to reguard or re-enter the leg entanglement.
Execution
- 1 Recognize the opponent's deep underhook or leg entry and immediately overhook their arm deeply, locking your whizzer above their elbow.
- 2 Sprawl your hips down and drive your whizzer-side hip into their shoulder, flattening their angle and breaking their connection to your leg.
- 3 Use your free hand to cross-face or post on their head, steering them away from re-attacking your base.
- 4 Walk your hips toward their head while maintaining the whizzer pressure, clearing your leg from any remaining entanglement.
- 5 Settle into half guard top by securing a crossface and underhook, releasing the whizzer only once you have established dominant top control.
Common mistakes
- × Applying the whizzer too shallow near the wrist instead of deep above the elbow, allowing the opponent to easily swim their arm back through and re-enter the vaporizer.
- × Staying upright instead of sprawling hips down, which gives the opponent space to elevate and sweep or re-attack the legs.
- × Releasing the whizzer too early before establishing crossface and top control in half guard, letting the opponent recover guard or re-engage the entanglement.
