Twister Finish
Submission
No-Gi
The Twister is a spine-lock submission that hyperrotates the cervical and thoracic spine by controlling the opponent's lower body with a leg entanglement while cranking their head and neck in the opposite direction. It is typically finished from back-exposure positions where you have established a body triangle or lockdown on one leg and can thread your arm under their far armpit to control the head.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The submission relies on opposing rotational forces: the legs pin the hips in one direction while the arms crank the upper spine and neck the other way.
- · Securing the lockdown or leg entanglement on the bottom leg is essential before attempting the upper body finish to prevent escape.
- · Your chest must stay tight against their back to eliminate space and prevent them from turning into you.
- · Anticipate the opponent defending by tucking their chin or grabbing your wrist—use a Gable grip or S-grip behind the head and peel with your elbow, not just your hands.
- · Hip pressure driving forward amplifies the rotational torque and makes the finish inescapable.
Execution
- 1 From your controlling position (crab ride, rodeo ride, etc.), secure a lockdown or figure-four leg entanglement on their near-side leg, pinning their hips to the mat.
- 2 Thread your far-side arm under their far armpit and reach behind their head, clasping your hands together in a Gable or S-grip on or behind the crown of their skull.
- 3 Flatten your chest onto their back, driving your hips forward to eliminate any space and lock their lower body in place.
- 4 Pull their head toward you while driving your hips and legs in the opposite direction, creating a spinal twist that torques the cervical and thoracic spine.
- 5 Apply the crank slowly and steadily, as the spine lock comes on fast—be ready for the tap.
Common mistakes
- × Attempting the head crank before fully securing the lockdown on the leg, allowing the opponent to spin out and relieve the rotational pressure.
- × Leaving space between your chest and their back, which lets them flatten or turn into you to neutralize the twist.
- × Gripping only the chin instead of behind the head, which reduces leverage and allows the opponent to strip the grip by tucking their chin.
