Triangle Escape Position
Position
The Triangle Escape Position is the defensive posture assumed when caught in an opponent's triangle choke from guard. The trapped practitioner has one arm inside and one arm outside the opponent's locked legs, and must establish specific grips and posture to create escape opportunities such as stacking, arm extraction, or passing the guard.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Posture up immediately and keep your spine straight to relieve choking pressure on the trapped-side neck.
- · Lock your hands together (Gable grip or clasped) around the opponent's hips or thigh to prevent them from breaking your posture down.
- · Turn your trapped shoulder inward toward the opponent's centerline to reduce the angle that makes the triangle tight.
- · Keep your base wide with knees spread to resist being swept or pulled off-balance.
- · Act before the opponent locks their ankles and secures the perpendicular angle, as a fully locked triangle dramatically reduces escape options.
Execution
- 1 As soon as the triangle is initiated, immediately posture up by driving your hips forward and extending your spine while keeping your head up.
- 2 Clasp your hands together around the opponent's waist or over their far thigh to anchor your posture and prevent them from pulling you down.
- 3 Rotate the trapped arm so your elbow points toward the opponent's midline, reducing cross-face pressure on your neck.
- 4 Establish a wide, stable base on your knees and toes, preparing to transition into a stack pass, arm extraction, or full guard pass.
Common mistakes
- × Leaning forward with a rounded back instead of posturing up, which tightens the choke and gives the attacker easy posture control.
- × Keeping the trapped-side elbow flared outward, which increases the angle across the neck and accelerates the submission.
- × Delaying the reaction and allowing the opponent to lock ankles and cut a perpendicular angle before establishing defensive posture, making all escapes exponentially harder.
