Thunderlock
Submission
A rare shoulder lock popularized by 10th Planet's Luis Quinones: a power half nelson variation from back control, usually available when the opponent hand-fights to defend the rear naked choke. The attacker controls the elbow and forces the arm up behind the opponent's own head, taking the shoulder past its range of motion.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · It appears off RNC defense — the opponent's hand-fighting arm becomes the target
- · Elbow control plus half-nelson leverage does the work, not grip strength
- · Chest-to-back connection must be kept while switching from choke to lock
Execution
- 1 From back control, attack the neck until the opponent commits an arm to defending
- 2 Catch the defending arm at the elbow
- 3 Thread a power half nelson and force the arm behind the opponent's head
- 4 Extend the leverage until the shoulder submits
Common mistakes
- × Losing back control by chasing the arm too early
- × Pushing the head instead of driving the arm through the half-nelson angle
