Spinning Armbar
Submission
The spinning armbar is a dynamic submission where the attacker rotates their body around the opponent's arm to secure a hyperextension finish, often catching opponents off-guard during transitions. It is particularly effective when the opponent defends static armbar attempts, during scrambles, or from standing/guard positions where rotational momentum can be generated.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Maintain a tight grip on the targeted wrist or forearm throughout the spin to prevent the opponent from retracting the arm.
- · Use your hips as the pivot point, keeping them close to the opponent's shoulder to shorten the rotation arc and increase control.
- · Generate momentum through leg swing and hip rotation rather than upper body pulling.
- · Pinch your knees tightly together over the opponent's chest or face during the finish to prevent posture recovery.
- · Anticipate the opponent pulling their arm back by accelerating through the spin rather than pausing mid-rotation.
Execution
- 1 Secure a firm two-on-one grip on the target arm (wrist and above the elbow) from your starting position.
- 2 Step or swing your far-side leg over the opponent's head while pivoting your hips tightly against their shoulder, using momentum to rotate your body 180 degrees around their arm.
- 3 As you complete the rotation, sit or fall back perpendicular to the opponent's body, clamping their arm between your thighs with their thumb pointing upward.
- 4 Squeeze your knees together, elevate your hips into the elbow joint, and pull the wrist toward your chest to finish the hyperextension.
Common mistakes
- × Spinning too far from the opponent's shoulder creates space that allows them to pull their arm free or stack you before you complete the rotation.
- × Failing to control the wrist throughout the spin results in the opponent bending their arm and clasping hands to defend, killing the submission.
- × Crossing your feet during the finish instead of pinching knees allows the opponent to bridge and roll out of the armbar position.
