Sitting Guard Pull

Takedown

The Sitting Guard Pull is a deliberate technique where the practitioner sits down from standing while controlling the opponent, immediately threading into Single Leg X guard. It is used to bypass wrestling exchanges and quickly establish a powerful open guard position, applicable in both gi and no-gi.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Maintain at least one strong grip or control point (collar/sleeve or wrist/elbow) before sitting to prevent the opponent from disengaging.
  • · Place one foot on the opponent's hip or inner thigh as you sit to create a frame and control distance.
  • · Sit at an angle toward the leg you are attacking rather than directly in front to facilitate Single Leg X entry.
  • · Use the momentum of sitting to immediately hook the target leg, not allowing a static seated position.
  • · Anticipate the opponent stepping back by pulling them forward with your grips as you drop.

Execution

  1. 1 From standing, secure a controlling grip on the opponent's wrist and collar (gi) or wrist and behind the neck/bicep (no-gi).
  2. 2 Step one foot to the opponent's same-side hip or inner thigh while angling your body toward their lead leg.
  3. 3 Sit down in a controlled manner, pulling the opponent's weight forward with your grips to prevent them from retreating.
  4. 4 As you land, immediately thread your outside leg behind the opponent's target knee and hook your inside foot on their far hip to enter Single Leg X.
  5. 5 Clamp the trapped leg tightly between your knees and secure ankle control to complete the guard entry.

Common mistakes

  • × Sitting straight down without a foot on the hip, allowing the opponent to sprawl or smash through with pressure into a guard pass.
  • × Dropping without securing proper grips first, resulting in the opponent simply stepping away and leaving you seated with no control.
  • × Failing to angle toward the target leg when sitting, which makes the Single Leg X hook entry slow and gives the opponent time to free their leg.
