Side Control Escape
Escape
The side control escape to turtle is a fundamental escape where the bottom player creates frames, generates hip movement, and turns into their opponent to achieve the turtle position. It is used when flattened under side control and a full guard recovery is not immediately available.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Strong frames against the opponent's neck and hip prevent them from settling their weight and buy space for movement.
- · Hip escaping (shrimping) away creates the critical gap needed to insert the knee and begin turning.
- · Turning toward the opponent rather than away prevents back exposure during the transition to turtle.
- · Timing the escape when the opponent shifts weight or transitions between control grips creates the best window.
- · Keeping elbows tight to the body prevents the opponent from re-flattening you with crossface or underhooks.
Execution
- 1 Establish inside frames with your near-side forearm against their neck or jaw and your far-side hand on their hip to create a pocket of space.
- 2 Bridge explosively to disrupt their base, then immediately hip escape away to create distance between your hips and theirs.
- 3 Use the created space to get your near-side knee and elbow connected, building a protective barrier between you and the opponent.
- 4 Continue turning into the opponent by driving off your far foot and rotating to your knees, securing a solid turtle position with elbows and knees tight.
- 5 Immediately protect your neck and secure wrist control to prevent guillotine or front headlock attacks as you settle into turtle.
Common mistakes
- × Flat-backing without bridging first, which means your hip escape has no power and you remain pinned under their chest pressure.
- × Turning away from the opponent instead of into them, which exposes the back and invites hooks and choke attacks.
- × Framing on the opponent's chest instead of neck and hip, giving them room to swim through and re-establish heavy crossface control.
