Side Control Armbar
Submission
Also known as:
Armbar from Side Control
The side control armbar is a submission applied by isolating the near or far arm while transitioning from a top side control or kesa gatame position into a perpendicular armbar finish. It capitalizes on the opponent's defensive frames or push attempts by trapping an extended arm and rotating into the classic juji gatame position.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Control the target arm at the wrist before transitioning your hips to prevent the opponent from retracting the elbow.
- · Pin the opponent's torso with chest pressure and crossface until the moment you commit to spinning for the armbar.
- · Squeeze your knees tightly together around the isolated arm to prevent hitchhiker or stack escapes.
- · Keep the opponent's thumb pointing upward (away from your body) to ensure the elbow hyperextends against your hip line.
- · Anticipate the opponent clasping hands together by wedging your forearm or foot between their grip before they lock it.
Execution
- 1 From side control or kesa gatame top, isolate the near arm by controlling the wrist with your far hand while maintaining heavy shoulder pressure on the opponent's face or chest.
- 2 Slide your near-side knee up tight against the opponent's hip, then swing your far leg over their head, sitting back as you clear their face with your shin or calf.
- 3 Clamp both knees together tightly, pull the trapped wrist to your chest with thumb pointing ceiling-ward, and elevate your hips into the elbow joint to finish the armbar.
Common mistakes
- × Releasing chest pressure too early before securing the wrist, allowing the opponent to turn into you and recover guard.
- × Leaving space between your knees and the opponent's shoulder when sitting back, giving them room to stack or pull the arm free.
- × Falling back too far away from the opponent's body instead of keeping hips glued tight to their shoulder, which weakens leverage and enables escape.
