Rolling Guard Pull

Takedown

The Rolling Guard Pull is a dynamic technique where the practitioner initiates a seated or butterfly-style guard pull and immediately uses rolling momentum to off-balance the opponent, sweeping them and arriving in top position. It is used from standing when the opponent resists a standard guard pull by posturing up or stepping back, converting their defensive energy into a sweep.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Use the initial guard pull grip attachment as the anchor point to generate rotational momentum.
  • · The roll direction must follow the line where the opponent's base is weakest, typically over their lead leg.
  • · Maintain tight hip connection throughout the roll to prevent the opponent from disengaging or sprawling.
  • · Anticipate the opponent pulling away by timing the roll to coincide with their backward weight shift.
  • · Keep elbows tight and chin tucked to maintain a compact frame during the inversion.

Execution

  1. 1 From standing guard position, secure a cross-collar grip and same-side sleeve grip (or equivalent no-gi controls on the neck and wrist).
  2. 2 Sit down while placing your feet on the opponent's hips or threading a butterfly hook, pulling them forward to break their posture.
  3. 3 As the opponent resists by driving forward or pulling back, load their weight onto one side by angling your hips and elevating with your hook.
  4. 4 Commit to the shoulder roll in the direction of the off-balanced side, using your grips and hook to carry the opponent over you.
  5. 5 Complete the roll and land in top position, immediately establishing chest pressure and a dominant pin.

Common mistakes

  • × Initiating the roll without first off-balancing the opponent, resulting in rolling underneath them with no sweep and ending in bottom position.
  • × Releasing grips during the inversion due to panic or poor grip endurance, allowing the opponent to separate and disengage entirely.
  • × Rolling straight backward instead of diagonally over the shoulder, which stalls momentum and exposes the back.
