Reverse X-Guard

Position
Also known as:
Reverse X Guard

Reverse X-Guard is a bottom position where the guard player has their legs configured in an X-Guard formation but facing away from the opponent, typically with hips underneath or to the side of the standing/kneeling opponent. It is primarily used as a transitional control point that sets up various passing sequences when the top player disengages or as a sweep platform from bottom.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Maintain strong hook control behind the opponent's knee and across their hip to restrict their base and movement.
  • · Keep your hips close underneath the opponent to maximize leverage and prevent them from establishing distance.
  • · Use the reverse-facing angle to off-balance the opponent toward directions they cannot easily defend.
  • · Anticipate the opponent posting or stepping over by redirecting your hooks to follow their weight shift.
  • · Control at least one leg or ankle grip to prevent the opponent from simply walking away or re-establishing guard.

Execution

  1. 1 From a seated or supine position, invert or rotate to face away from your opponent while threading your legs into X-Guard hooks on their lead leg.
  2. 2 Establish one hook behind their knee and the other across their far hip or thigh, locking your feet to form the X configuration.
  3. 3 Grip their ankle or pant leg on the trapped side to anchor their base and prevent retreat.
  4. 4 Use hip elevation and hook pressure to off-balance them, creating opportunities to transition to top position or sweep.
  5. 5 As they react by posting or shifting weight, disengage into your chosen passing sequence such as smash pass, leg drag, or knee cut.

Common mistakes

  • × Positioning hips too far from the opponent, which eliminates leverage and allows them to easily step free of the hooks.
  • × Neglecting the ankle or pant grip, letting the opponent retract their leg and reset to a neutral standing position.
  • × Crossing feet without proper hook placement, resulting in weak control that collapses under pressure and exposes your back.
