Reverse Arm-triangle Choke
Submission
An arm triangle (kata gatame family) finished from the opposite side of the trapped arm: the opponent's arm is driven across their neck away from the attacker and the head-and-arm grip closes from the reverse angle. Typically appears off north-south and top transitions when the standard arm triangle side is defended.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Same blood-choke mechanics as kata gatame — their own shoulder and arm close the carotids
- · The reverse angle means the choking pressure comes from the opposite side to the trapped arm
- · Chest pressure and head position seal the choke, not arm strength
Execution
- 1 Drive the opponent's far arm across their neck
- 2 Lock the head-and-arm grip from the reverse side
- 3 Settle chest pressure over the trapped arm
- 4 Adjust your angle away from their hips and squeeze
Common mistakes
- × Not driving the arm deep enough across the neck before locking
- × Squeezing with the arms alone instead of settling chest pressure
