Pendulum Sweep

Sweep

The pendulum sweep is a high-percentage sweep from closed guard that uses a swinging leg motion to generate momentum and off-balance the opponent laterally. It capitalizes on controlling one side of the opponent's body while sweeping their posted leg, landing directly in mount.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The sweeping leg must swing out wide and then pendulum back forcefully to generate rotational momentum.
  • · Control of the opponent's same-side arm eliminates their ability to post and resist the sweep.
  • · Angling your hips out to the side before swinging creates the space needed for maximum leg momentum.
  • · Your underhooking leg clamps high across the opponent's back to act as the fulcrum point.
  • · If the opponent posts wide with their free leg, transition to a triangle or armbar on the controlled arm.

Execution

  1. 1 From closed guard, grip the opponent's same-side sleeve or wrist and secure a cross-grip on their collar or overhook their arm, pinning it to your chest.
  2. 2 Open your guard, plant your foot on the mat on the sleeve-grip side, and hip escape out at an angle to create space for your swinging leg.
  3. 3 Shoot your free leg high across the opponent's back, clamping behind their shoulder with your hamstring.
  4. 4 Swing your bottom leg out wide in a large arc, then pendulum it back forcefully toward the opponent while pulling their trapped arm across your body.
  5. 5 Follow the momentum to roll them over, keeping the arm controlled as you rise directly into mount.

Common mistakes

  • × Failing to angle the hips out before sweeping, resulting in insufficient pendulum arc and weak momentum that the opponent easily resists.
  • × Not securing the opponent's arm tightly against your body, allowing them to post their hand on the mat and block the sweep.
  • × Swinging the leg in a small arc rather than a wide exaggerated pendulum, which fails to generate enough force to displace the opponent's base.
