Octopus Guard Pass

Pass

The Octopus Guard Pass is used to defeat an opponent who has established octopus guard (a half guard variation where the bottom player wraps an arm deep under your far leg while controlling your posture). The pass focuses on freeing the trapped leg, neutralizing the underhook-style arm wrap, and advancing to half guard top or side control.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Heavy hip pressure on the opponent's wrapping arm to pin it and reduce their ability to off-balance you.
  • · Control the opponent's head and near-side shoulder to flatten them out and kill their angle.
  • · Free your trapped leg by circling it away from their grip rather than pulling straight back.
  • · Anticipate the bottom player re-pummel or back-take attempt by keeping your elbow tight and denying space under your body.
  • · Maintain chest-to-chest weight distribution to prevent them from re-establishing the guard angle.

Execution

  1. 1 Drop your hips low and heavy onto their wrapping arm while using your near-side hand to crossface or control their head, flattening them to the mat.
  2. 2 With your free hand, peel or pin their wrapping arm against your thigh, trapping it between your hip and their body.
  3. 3 Backstep or windshield-wiper your trapped leg to clear their half guard hook, using circular motion rather than a linear pull.
  4. 4 Once your leg clears, immediately drive your knee to the mat on the far side and consolidate either half guard top or slide through to side control.
  5. 5 Secure an underhook or crossface and settle your weight to prevent any guard re-establishment.

Common mistakes

  • × Trying to yank the trapped leg straight out instead of circling it free, which allows the bottom player to maintain the wrap and attempt a sweep.
  • × Posturing up too high while attempting to pass, giving the octopus guard player the space to take the back or recompose their angle.
  • × Neglecting head control after freeing the leg, allowing the bottom player to turn into you and re-establish half guard or deep half.
