Mission Control
Position
Also known as:
Mission Control Bottom
Mission control bottom is the guard player's configuration at the base of Eddie Bravo's rubber guard: posture broken, one calf lying across the opponent's upper back, and the opposite hand gripping your own ankle or shin to lock the fold. From this seat the bottom player runs the whole rubber guard ladder — zombie, New York, chill dog — and the triangle, omoplata, and gogoplata tree.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Lock with the skeleton: the opposite-hand shin grip and calf-across-back hold the fold so your muscles do not have to.
- · Everything you do is a trade up the ladder — free hands and leg repositions only happen while some other limb holds the break.
- · Their divided defense is the offense: hands that fight the leg abandon the neck, hands that guard the neck abandon the posture fight.
- · Angle beats depth — small hip shifts to either side open the omoplata and triangle lanes without loosening the lock.
- · Know your flexibility budget; the position should feel like storage, not a stretch.
Execution
- 1 Break posture from closed guard until their chest folds toward you.
- 2 Climb the calf across their upper back and lock the opposite hand on your ankle or shin.
- 3 Start the hand war: force their posting hand toward the mat for the zombie.
- 4 Swap grips up the ladder — same-side shin grip for New York as the climb continues.
- 5 Attack from the rungs: triangle and omoplata off their arm retreats, gogoplata as the chin line opens.
Common mistakes
- × Holding the fold with arm strength while the legs float, exhausting exactly the limbs the attacks need.
- × Chasing submissions before their posting hand is dealt with, letting them posture through the attack mid-flight.
- × Flattening the hips to rest, which stacks your own legs on top of you and feeds the pressure pass.
