Loop Choke Defense
Escape
Gi only
Defending the loop choke: the danger moment is when your head dips with a collar grip in place. Keep posture, strip or turn into the choking collar grip, and if caught mid-loop, drive your head back out toward the open side before the second hand locks behind it.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The loop needs your head under their gripping arm — posture prevents the trap
- · One collar grip is a warning: fight it before the snap-down comes
- · Turning INTO the grip loosens the loop; pulling straight back tightens it
Execution
- 1 Break posture-breaking grips early and keep your head above their chest line
- 2 If snapped down, get a hand inside the loop at your own collar
- 3 Circle your head toward the open side, into their gripping elbow
- 4 Come up with posture as the loop slips, controlling their legs against follow-ups
Common mistakes
- × Diving into a knee-cut or pass with the collar grip still attached
- × Pulling the head straight back once inside the loop, which chokes you on the way out
