Leg Hook
Position
The leg hook in half guard is a foundational position where the bottom player uses their legs to entangle one of the top player's legs, typically hooking the inside leg with both legs or securing a butterfly-style hook. It serves as the primary retention mechanism in half guard and is the launching point for sweeps, back takes, guard transitions, and submission setups from bottom, while also being a position the top player must address before passing.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Maintain a strong triangle or figure-four configuration with your legs around the opponent's trapped leg to prevent extraction.
- · Keep your outside knee pinched tight and your inside hook active to control the distance and angle of the trapped leg.
- · Combine the leg hook with upper body frames or an underhook to prevent the top player from flattening you out.
- · Anticipate the top player's knee slice or leg extraction by adjusting hook depth and re-pummeliing your inside hook when they backstep.
- · Use the leg hook as a pivot point to create angles for offensive entries rather than holding statically.
Execution
- 1 From bottom half guard, triangle your legs around the opponent's near leg, placing your inside hook behind their knee and your outside leg over their ankle or shin.
- 2 Pinch your knees together and curl your heels to lock the entanglement, preventing the opponent from freeing their leg.
- 3 Establish an upper body connection—either an underhook, a frame on the bicep, or a cross-face block—to complement the leg control.
- 4 Maintain a hip-to-hip angle by staying on your side rather than flat on your back, using the hook to off-balance the top player.
- 5 From this controlled position, initiate your chosen attack—sweep, guard transition, or submission setup—by adjusting hook depth and hip angle.
Common mistakes
- × Hooking too shallow (only at the ankle) allows the top player to easily extract their leg with a knee cut or backstep.
- × Lying flat on your back while holding the hook gives the top player crossface control and eliminates your sweeping leverage.
- × Neglecting upper body frames while focusing solely on the leg hook lets the opponent establish heavy chest pressure and flatten you for a pass.
