Lasso Triangle

Submission Gi only

The lasso triangle is a submission executed from lasso guard bottom where the practitioner converts their lasso grip control into a triangle choke by threading the lasso-side leg across the opponent's neck while trapping one arm. It capitalizes on the postural control and arm isolation inherently created by the lasso guard position.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The lasso wrap already isolates one arm inside, which is half the triangle setup completed.
  • · Breaking the opponent's posture with the lasso leg and sleeve grip is essential before attempting to shoot the triangle leg across the neck.
  • · The free leg must clear over the opponent's head quickly while maintaining the lasso tension to prevent posture recovery.
  • · Angle off to the choking side (perpendicular) to close the triangle tightly and increase finishing pressure.
  • · Anticipate the opponent stacking by immediately cutting the angle and controlling their posture with the locked triangle and a cross-grip on the head.

Execution

  1. 1 From lasso guard with your shin wrapped around their arm and controlling their same-side sleeve, use your opposite foot on their hip and the sleeve grip to break their posture down toward you.
  2. 2 Release the lasso wrap and immediately swing that leg over the opponent's neck to the opposite side, keeping the trapped arm pinned across your centerline with the sleeve grip.
  3. 3 Lock the triangle by placing the back of your knee over your opposite ankle, ensuring only one arm and their head are inside the triangle.
  4. 4 Cut a strong angle toward the trapped-arm side by hip escaping, pull their head down, and squeeze your knees together to finish the choke.

Common mistakes

  • × Releasing the lasso wrap before adequately breaking posture, allowing the opponent to stand up or back out before the triangle can be locked.
  • × Failing to keep the opponent's arm across the centerline during transition, resulting in them pulling the arm free and defending the triangle.
  • × Locking the triangle without cutting the angle, leading to a loose choke that the opponent can stack through or posture out of.
