Knee Lever Sweep
Sweep
Also known as:
John Wayne Sweep
The Knee Lever Sweep is executed from knee shield half guard bottom, using the shield knee as a lever against the opponent's hip or thigh while off-balancing them laterally. It capitalizes on the opponent's forward pressure or attempts to smash past the knee shield, converting their weight commitment into a sweep that lands you in top half guard or side control.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The knee shield acts as a fulcrum—wedge it firmly across the opponent's hip line to create maximum leverage for the sweep.
- · Off-balance the opponent forward and laterally by pulling with your underhook or collar grip before extending the knee lever.
- · Timing the sweep when the opponent drives forward or posts high makes their base most vulnerable to the lateral displacement.
- · If the opponent bases wide to resist, transition to back-take or switch to a different half guard sweep like the old school sweep to chain attacks.
- · Control the far-side arm or lapel to prevent the opponent from posting and stopping the sweep.
Execution
- 1 From knee shield half guard, establish a strong underhook on the near side and grip the opponent's far collar or wrist to control their posting hand.
- 2 Pull the opponent's weight forward and toward your knee shield side using your grips, loading their weight onto your frame.
- 3 Drive your knee shield across their hip while simultaneously extending your leg and bridging your hips toward the side you are sweeping them to.
- 4 Follow the momentum, keeping your half guard hook engaged on their leg, and come up to top position as they roll over.
- 5 Immediately consolidate by driving your hips forward into side control or stabilize in top half guard.
Common mistakes
- × Extending the knee shield without first pulling the opponent's weight forward, resulting in simply pushing them away rather than sweeping them over.
- × Failing to control the far-side arm or collar, allowing the opponent to post their hand and block the sweep entirely.
- × Losing the half guard hook on the bottom leg during the sweep, which lets the opponent disengage and recover guard or scramble free.
