K-Guard Sweep
Sweep
The K-Guard Sweep is executed from the K-Guard bottom position, where one leg frames across the opponent's hip/thigh while the other hooks behind their far leg, forming a 'K' shape. It off-balances the top player by elevating and redirecting their base, typically sweeping them over your body to land in a top position. It is most effective when the opponent is postured upright or driving forward into your guard.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The cross-leg frame on the hip must stay rigid to control distance and create a fulcrum for the sweep.
- · The hooking leg behind the far knee or thigh removes their posting base on that side, making the sweep direction viable.
- · Grip control on the sleeve or wrist of the near arm prevents them from posting to recover balance.
- · Timing the sweep when the opponent drives forward or shifts weight over you amplifies the off-balance.
- · If the opponent backsteps or disengages, transition to crab ride or single-leg entries rather than forcing the sweep.
Execution
- 1 From K-Guard bottom, establish a strong frame with your shin across the opponent's near hip while threading your opposite leg behind their far thigh, hooking at or above the knee.
- 2 Secure a cross-grip on their near-side sleeve or wrist and control their far leg with your hooking leg to eliminate their ability to post.
- 3 Elevate with your framing leg while pulling their upper body toward you with the sleeve grip, breaking their posture and loading their weight over your hips.
- 4 Kick the hooking leg through while bridging your hips in the sweep direction, rolling them over to the side of the trapped leg.
- 5 Follow through immediately, coming up to a top position such as side control or knee-on-belly, maintaining your grips throughout the transition.
Common mistakes
- × Placing the hooking leg too shallow behind the opponent's knee, allowing them to easily step free and negate the sweep.
- × Neglecting the sleeve or wrist grip on the near arm, which lets the opponent post a hand and block the sweep entirely.
- × Attempting the sweep while flat on the back without hip elevation, resulting in insufficient leverage to off-balance the top player.
