K-Guard Back Take
Transition
The K-Guard back take is a transition from the K-Guard (an inverted open guard position with a knee shield framing across the opponent's torso) to back control. It exploits the off-balancing and angle created by the K-Guard to thread underneath the opponent and attach to their back as they attempt to posture or pass.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The cross-grip on the far ankle or pant leg prevents the opponent from stepping away and creates the turning angle.
- · Hip inversion and shoulder-walking underneath the opponent are essential to reach the far hip.
- · The knee shield must stay active to maintain distance and prevent the opponent from smashing down.
- · Anticipate the opponent posting wide or backstopping—use their weight shift to accelerate your rotation to their back.
- · Seatbelt or waist control must be established before abandoning the leg entanglement.
Execution
- 1 From K-Guard, secure a cross-grip on the opponent's far ankle or pant leg while maintaining your knee frame across their torso.
- 2 Invert slightly and hip-escape your body underneath the opponent, threading toward their far hip while pulling their trapped leg across your centerline.
- 3 Use the momentum of your inversion to rotate behind the opponent, releasing the knee frame and reaching for a seatbelt grip around their torso.
- 4 Insert your first hook on the near side as you clear their hip, then secure the second hook to establish full back control.
- 5 Consolidate the seatbelt grip and flatten or angle your body to prevent them from turning into you.
Common mistakes
- × Releasing the cross-ankle grip too early, allowing the opponent to step free and re-establish a passing position before you reach their back.
- × Failing to invert deeply enough, resulting in getting stuck at a shallow angle where the opponent can crossface and flatten you.
- × Neglecting to secure the seatbelt before inserting hooks, which lets the opponent spin and face you, converting your back take attempt into a scramble.
