Hitchhiker Escape
Escape
The Hitchhiker Escape is used to escape an armbar by rotating the trapped arm thumb-up (like a hitchhiker) and spinning your body toward the attacker to relieve hyperextension pressure. It exploits the anatomical limit of the attacker's hip control when you rotate along the long axis of your arm, allowing you to come up into half guard.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Turning the thumb toward the ceiling (hitchhiker position) aligns the elbow joint so it resists the hyperextension force of the armbar.
- · Spinning your entire body in the direction of your trapped thumb creates the escape angle rather than pulling the arm out by force.
- · Keeping your elbow tight to the attacker's body as you rotate prevents them from re-centering the armbar.
- · Timing the escape before the attacker fully extends and locks their hips is critical—once hips are fully elevated and arm is isolated, the window closes.
- · Anticipate the attacker clamping their knees tighter by using your free hand to frame on their top leg as you spin through.
Execution
- 1 With your arm caught in armbar control, immediately clasp your hands together and turn your trapped thumb skyward (hitchhiker grip) to prevent hyperextension.
- 2 Use your free hand to push against their top leg while you begin rotating your body toward your trapped thumb, spinning on the mat in that direction.
- 3 Continue rotating until you are belly-down, keeping your elbow glued tight against their hip or thigh throughout the spin.
- 4 As you come to your knees facing them, pull your elbow free and immediately drive forward, securing half guard by trapping one of their legs between yours.
- 5 Establish an underhook on the near side to consolidate your half guard position.
Common mistakes
- × Trying to stack or pull the arm straight out instead of rotating the body—this plays directly into the armbar leverage and leads to getting tapped.
- × Pointing the thumb down instead of up during the spin, which exposes the elbow to hyperextension in the new angle.
- × Spinning but leaving space between your elbow and the attacker's body, allowing them to re-isolate the arm and finish the armbar mid-escape.
