Hip Bump Sweep
Sweep
Also known as:
Hip Bump Sweep V2
Sit-Up Sweep
The Hip Bump Sweep is a powerful sweep executed from closed guard bottom where the practitioner sits up explosively, using hip and core momentum to off-balance the top player and roll them into mount. It is most effective when the opponent sits upright or posts their hands back, creating space and shifting their weight rearward.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Timing is critical: initiate when the opponent's posture is upright or their weight shifts backward.
- · The sweep's power comes from an explosive hip thrust combined with a sit-up motion, not from arm strength alone.
- · Angle your body approximately 45 degrees toward the side you're sweeping to maximize leverage.
- · Overhook or control the far arm on the sweeping side to prevent the opponent from posting.
- · If the opponent resists by driving forward, immediately chain into a guillotine or kimura from the sit-up position.
Execution
- 1 From closed guard, open your guard and plant one foot on the mat while posting on the opposite elbow behind you.
- 2 Explosively sit up into your opponent while thrusting your hips forward and upward into their torso, angling 45 degrees toward the posting foot side.
- 3 Reach over the opponent's same-side shoulder with your free arm, hugging high, while controlling or blocking their far arm to prevent posting.
- 4 Drive through the opponent using your hip momentum and planted foot to roll them over, following through directly into mount.
Common mistakes
- × Sitting up without an explosive hip thrust, resulting in insufficient force that allows the opponent to simply push you back down.
- × Failing to control or block the opponent's posting arm, letting them base out and stop the sweep entirely.
- × Going straight forward instead of angling 45 degrees to the side, which gives the opponent a stronger base to resist the sweep.
