Back Control Escape
Escape
The back control escape is used when your opponent has established back control with hooks and a seatbelt or collar grip. The primary goal is to clear the hooks, get your back to the mat, and work to a neutral or top position while defending chokes throughout the escape.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Protect your neck first by fighting grips with both hands before initiating any escape movement.
- · Escape toward the side of the choking arm (underhook side) to reduce choke leverage and pin their bottom hook.
- · Keep your back connected to their chest during the slide to prevent them from re-adjusting angles.
- · Clear the bottom hook first, as it is the primary anchor keeping you in back control.
- · Anticipate the re-choke attempt as you turn into them by keeping your chin tucked and maintaining hand control.
Execution
- 1 Immediately grip-fight to control the choking hand, securing two-on-one or stripping it to your chin level while tucking your chin tight.
- 2 Scoot your hips toward the underhook/choking-arm side, angling to pin their bottom hook to the mat with your leg pressure.
- 3 Clear the bottom hook by stepping over it with your near leg or pushing it away with your hands, then begin sliding your back to the mat.
- 4 Once your shoulders touch the mat, address the top hook by kicking it off or using your hand, turning into them to establish half guard or side control.
- 5 Secure a dominant or neutral position such as half guard, closed guard, or side control top before disengaging grip fighting.
Common mistakes
- × Reaching back to push the opponent away instead of fighting the choking hand first, which exposes the neck to an immediate rear naked choke.
- × Escaping to the wrong side (away from the choking arm), which feeds directly into the choke by giving them the angle they need.
- × Flattening out on your stomach instead of sliding laterally to the mat, which allows the opponent to flatten you and transition to a body triangle or tighter control.
