Foundations and Key Mentors
Coelho began his formal jiu-jitsu education at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy of Carlos Augusto, training under the direct instruction of Mauro Santos — himself a student of Carlos Gracie Junior. This placed Coelho within the prestigious Gracie Barra lineage from day one, granting him access to a deep technical tradition and a structured competitive framework.
Several influential figures shaped his development as a grappler. Master Carlos Augusto provided the foundational environment, while Mauro Santos served as his primary instructor and most enduring mentor. Vinícius Amaral played a decisive role in recognizing Coelho's growth, promoting him to the rank of black belt in 2006. Mauro Santos subsequently awarded him his first, second, and third black belt degrees — a progression that speaks to the depth and longevity of their teacher-student bond. His fourth black belt degree was later conferred by Vinícius Draculino, another prominent figure within the Gracie Barra system.
A Mentor's Lasting Legacy
The relationship between Coelho and Mauro Santos extended well beyond rank promotions. Santos was a formative presence throughout Coelho's career, shaping not only his technical understanding but his broader approach to the art. The loss of his mentor, who passed away at the age of 43, marked one of the most profound moments in Coelho's life — a reminder of the deeply human connections that define jiu-jitsu communities at their best.
