Vinicius "Magoo" Canevari was born on March 28, 1974, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, into an environment that laid the groundwork for one of southern Brazil's most accomplished jiu-jitsu careers. At 15, in 1989, he took his first steps onto the mats at the historic Clube Barra de Jiu Jitsu, training under coach Cláudio França. The academy served as a foundational institution in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, producing notable figures such as Joe Moreira and Marcos Vinicius de Lucia. Immersed in that competitive culture from an early age, Canevari absorbed both the technical rigor and the championship mindset that would define his career.

During his late teenage years, Canevari briefly explored commercial pilot courses at ages 18 and 19, though he never pursued a professional aviation career. His academic path led him to physiotherapy, a discipline in which he graduated in 2001. This foundation in human movement and rehabilitation became a meaningful complement to his lifelong commitment to combat sports, informing his approach to athlete development throughout his coaching career.

Canevari's progression through the belt ranks began under Cláudio França at Clube Barra de Jiu Jitsu, where he built the technical foundation that would define his style as both a competitor and a coach. Upon reaching purple belt, he made a pivotal transition — joining the Brigadeiro academy under Master Eduardo Venâncio, a move that would shape the remainder of his jiu-jitsu journey.

Under Eduardo Venâncio's instruction, Canevari earned his brown and black belts, receiving the black belt in 1999. That milestone marked the culmination of a decade of dedicated training begun in his mid-teens. In 1996, Canevari relocated to Londrina, Paraná, carrying with him the high-level jiu-jitsu forged in Rio de Janeiro's competitive academies. Magoo Jiu Jitsu grew into one of the strongest BJJ teams in southern Brazil, earning a respected place on the national competition circuit. Over the team's history, Canevari produced over 30 black belts — a remarkable testament to the depth and longevity of his influence on the sport. His physiotherapy background further strengthened his coaching methodology, equipping him with a nuanced understanding of injury prevention, athlete health, and the long-term development of practitioners at every level.

Canevari's competitive career demonstrated exceptional longevity, with meaningful results accumulated across multiple decades and divisions. Competing in the Peso Leve division (76kg/168lbs), he established himself as a consistent presence at the elite level of masters competition in Brazil and abroad.

South American and National Dominance

His record in South American competition stands among the most distinguished of his career, with multiple South American Championship titles earned across the Senior 1 and Master categories between 2008 and 2015. On the national stage, he claimed Brazilian National Championship gold in the Master 3 division in both 2015 and 2016. He also secured the South Brazilian Championship title in 2009 in the Master category and again in 2015 in the Senior 1 division — on the latter occasion sweeping both the weight and absolute titles. At the Curitiba International Open, he claimed the Master 3 division title in 2015 and 2016.

International Recognition

His performances on the international stage further cemented his reputation as an elite masters competitor. At the European Open Championship, he earned a bronze medal in 2010 before reaching the final of the Master 3 division in 2016, where he finished as runner-up.
