Instructional Role at One Jiu Jitsu Academy
Following his competitive career, Peterson established himself as an instructor and professor within the Los Angeles BJJ community. He held a coaching position at One Jiu Jitsu Academy, contributing to the gym's instructional program before his employment there ended in March 2025.
Public Dispute and Response
On September 15, 2025, One Jiu Jitsu Academy published a public statement distancing the gym from Peterson in response to comments he had made related to conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The statement emphasized the academy's commitment to a non-political training environment and clarified that Peterson had not been employed there since March 2025, making clear that his statements were his own and did not represent the gym's values or positions.
On October 8, 2025, Peterson responded publicly to the academy's statement. In his response, he posted images he argued demonstrated that the academy itself had shared politically inflected content, including USA flag-themed apparel and a highlighted post by an instructor identified as Shawn. Peterson framed these examples as inconsistent with the academy's stated non-political stance, and the exchange drew attention both within the BJJ community and beyond.
The dispute unfolded during a period in 2025 in which U.S. sports communities were actively navigating questions around social media conduct, political expression, and professional boundaries. For Peterson, the public exchange with his former employer marked a notable chapter in a career built primarily on competitive achievement and instructional work on the mats.
