Talia Marie Vaughan

Born on August 6, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Talia Marie Vaughan grew up surrounded by a multi-generational boxing tradition — yet it was a deliberate departure from that legacy that would shape her athletic identity. When her brother, Andre Vaughan, chose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu over boxing, his passion for grappling proved contagious. Inspired by Andre's dedication — a journey that would eventually earn him a black belt of his own — a seven-year-old Talia followed him onto the mats. On August 12, 2003, she registered at Mica Cipili's grappling academy in Las Vegas, taking her first steps in a sport that would come to define her competitive career.

Through Mica Cipili's academy, Vaughan was introduced early to the Gracie Humaità lineage, establishing the technical and philosophical foundation upon which her entire development would be built.

From her earliest days on the mat, Talia Vaughan trained exclusively under Mica Cipili of Gracie Humaita, progressing through every belt under the same instructor. That unwavering consistency became one of the defining hallmarks of her growth, elevating her into one of the premier grappling talents in Las Vegas and the broader region throughout her colored belt career.

Brown Belt Dominance

The brown belt years marked the pinnacle of her pre-black belt competitive output. In 2017, Vaughan placed 3rd at the IBJJF World Championship and 2nd at the IBJJF American Nationals, firmly announcing herself as a national-level contender. She carried that momentum into 2018, claiming gold at both the IBJJF World Championship and the JJWL World Cup — a commanding finish to her colored belt career.

A Promotion Atop the Podium

The 2018 IBJJF World Championship victory carried a significance that extended beyond the gold medal itself. On June 1, 2018, standing atop the podium at Worlds, Vaughan received her black belt promotion directly from Mica Cipili — a rare and deeply symbolic milestone that marked fifteen years of unbroken training under a single mentor.

Vaughan's transition to black belt competition saw her continue competing under the Gracie Humaita banner in the Peso Leve division (64 kg / 141.5 lbs), bringing the same disciplined approach that had defined her colored belt years. In 2019, she remained active on the IBJJF circuit, recording a 2nd place finish at the 2019 IBJJF Las Vegas Summer Open and a 3rd place finish at the 2019 IBJJF Portland Open — results that reflected a competitor establishing her footing among the black belt elite while demonstrating the resilience that had carried her through the ranks.

Vaughan's career arc — from a seven-year-old following her brother into a Las Vegas gym to a Worlds-crowned black belt — stands as a testament to the long-term rewards of training with purpose within a single lineage.
