His introduction to BJJ came through a motivation many practitioners can relate to: returning from a trip to the United States overweight, Gasparelli took up Jiu-Jitsu as a means of getting back into shape. Through a friend named Jorge who coached at Ricardo de La Riva's gym, he entered the BJJ world and earned his blue belt training at that academy. He also cross-trained at the gym of Osvaldo Alves, a renowned BJJ red belt whose own strong Judo background made his academy a natural fit. A well-regarded product of the Osvaldo Alves lineage, Penha provided the structured mentorship Gasparelli needed to elevate his game — and it was under Penha's guidance that he ultimately received his BJJ black belt, cementing a lineage that traces directly back through Osvaldo Alves.

Holding black belts in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu made Gasparelli a rare and unusually complete grappler. His Judo base had always given him a sophisticated command of balance, timing, and body mechanics; his deepening BJJ knowledge layered submission awareness and ground control on top of that already-formidable technical infrastructure.

Around the year 2000, Sergio Penha relocated to Portugal for professional reasons, leaving Gasparelli without a primary coach and prompting a period of transition. The move from BTT (Brazilian Top Team) to Black House came through an invitation from 'Joinha' (Jorge Guimaraes) and Carlos Barreto, two key figures behind one of MMA's most prominent teams of that era. For Gasparelli, it represented a professional crossroads: he chose to step back from his career as a Brazilian lawyer — without abandoning it entirely — and commit himself to full-time coaching.

At Black House, Gasparelli worked with a roster of elite fighters and made a particularly significant impact on the ground game of UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Silva's praise for his coach spoke to the extraordinary depth of Gasparelli's technical knowledge: the champion famously described Babu as a "walking jiu jitsu encyclopedia" — an assessment that captured both the volume and the precision of what Gasparelli brought to the mats. One of the more distinctive chapters of Gasparelli's martial arts journey unfolded during his time at Black House, where he trained alongside Luta Livre standout Hugo Duarte. Extended exposure to Duarte's grappling methodology sparked a deep and systematic interest in Luta Livre — particularly its approach to foot locks and leg attacks, areas where the discipline had developed a sophisticated and battle-tested body of technique.

Rather than treating Luta Livre as a peripheral curiosity, Gasparelli pursued it with the same seriousness he had brought to Judo and BJJ. He engaged with it as a complete system, not merely a source of borrowed techniques. That commitment was formally recognized in February 2010, when Hugo Duarte awarded Gasparelli his Luta Livre "Certified Instructor" diploma — a credential that came directly from one of the art's most prominent and respected figures.

With that certification, Gasparelli joined the rare ranks of practitioners formally credentialed across three distinct grappling disciplines: a Judo black belt, a BJJ black belt under Sergio Penha, and a certified Luta Livre instructor under Hugo Duarte.
