In July 2010, Dunkaev immigrated to the United States, settling in California. He supported himself through work in the hospitality industry and as a truck driver, balancing the demands of building a new life with a deepening commitment to martial arts. It was during this period that he made the decisive turn toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — a discipline that would come to define his identity as both a competitor and a community figure.

Dunkaev's formal introduction to BJJ began at Gracie Barra Costa Mesa, where he took his first steps on the mats. Seeking higher-level instruction, he transitioned to Art Of Jiu-Jitsu Academy (AOJ), training under brothers Rafael Mendes and Guilherme Mendes. The Mendes brothers recognized his development and awarded him his blue belt, and the technical environment at AOJ left a lasting imprint on his game — exposing him to some of the most refined guard and finishing systems in the sport.

Dunkaev subsequently joined Checkmat Headquarters, where his progression accelerated under the guidance of Leonardo Vieira, widely known as Leozinho.
