Rodrigo Fujita

Rodrigo Alexandre Fujita's path into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began not on the mats of São Paulo but in the unlikely setting of Gunma Prefecture, Japan, where his family had relocated in search of better opportunities. In 2008, Fujita had his first encounter with the art — not inside a gym, but when a friend who had recently started training demonstrated dominant control and submissions on him. In a 2026 interview with Gracie Magazine, Fujita recalled the experience as though his friend possessed a "superpower," and that feeling of helplessness became the spark that drove him to learn.

Before formal instruction began, Roberto Younes served as Fujita's first guide into the BJJ community, introducing him to the culture and giving him his initial steps on the mat. His first professor was Edvaldo Santos of Damm Fight Japan, under whom Fujita began building the foundations of his game.

Those early years were defined by persistence rather than rapid progress. Fujita spent approximately three and a half years at white belt and competed for nearly two years before earning his first gold medal. He reflected on that period with characteristic candor in a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview: "Eu era muito ruim, mas tinha constância. Não desistia." — "I was really bad, but I was consistent. I never gave up." That stubborn consistency would come to define his entire career.

Fujita's persistence at white belt eventually gave way to a decisive run of results at blue belt. Still competing in Japan, he won both the All Japan Championship and the Rickson Cup — results that cemented his confidence and announced his potential on the competitive circuit before a significant life transition.

Around 2009 — inferred from a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview in which Fujita noted that four years had passed since his return as of 2013 — he left Japan and came back to Brazil. Before departing, Edvaldo Santos advised him on where to continue his development upon his return.

Following that guidance, Fujita joined the Ryan Gracie Team in Santo André, São Paulo. He initially trained under Francelino do Carmo, known as "Fran," progressing through blue and brown belt under his instruction. Celsinho Vinícius remained an active influence on the mats alongside his formal training, and master Daniel Gracie had an occasional presence at the Santo André sessions. Marcelo Renaldin and Juliano Freire ultimately promoted Fujita to black belt, completing a lineage built across two continents and multiple instructors. Throughout this climb, training partner Roger Ambrose is credited by Fujita as someone who consistently pushed him to raise his level each day.

The lessons absorbed from this constellation of mentors distilled into a guiding principle Fujita articulated in a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview: sacrifice is personal; paths may diverge, but one must never forget their origins, because reputation follows — so be fair, respect people, and avoid closing doors.

In 2013, while balancing formal employment under Brazil's CLT labor regime with a competition-focused training schedule, Fujita sought a way to align body, soul, and spirit. That search led him to the Cristo Salva Santo André church. The connection between faith and Jiu-Jitsu emerged organically: a pastor observed Fujita drilling takedowns with children after a service and invited him to formalize a training group within the church. Classes began meeting twice a week in that setting.

When the church eventually closed, the project did not end — it evolved. The twice-weekly group became the foundation for a full academy: IFJ — Instituto Fujita de Jiu-Jitsu, based in Santo André. As of October 2026, IFJ operates with its founding values intact, and Fujita teaches four group classes per week there. He described the academy's mission in terms that reach beyond sport in a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview, stating its purpose is "to bring God's love through our actions and, if necessary, to speak about Him."

The founding narrative of IFJ reflects the intersection of community service, Christian faith, and Jiu-Jitsu that defines Fujita's identity as a coach — an identity shaped not by marketing, but by the accidental discovery that a pastor once watched him play-wrestle with children after Sunday service.

Fujita's competitive journey has unfolded across three countries: Japan, where he first competed; Brazil, where he built his career at the state and national level; and the United States, where he has achieved his most recognized international results. That arc — from white belt struggles in Gunma to podiums at major IBJJF events in the Masters division — sits at the center of the story he tells through his continued presence on the competition floor.

Domestic Honors and Public Recognition

At the state level in Brazil, Fujita claimed first place at the Circuito Paulista in 2023 and reached the final of the GP Master da Federação Paulista. His achievements on the mats earned him recognition beyond the sport as well: the City Hall of Santo André honored him for his contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

International Podiums and World Master Success

At the international level, Fujita earned third place at both the IBJJF Pan American Championship (Gi) and the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship, placing him among the best Masters competitors in the world. His most sustained run of form came at the IBJJF World Master Championship, where he secured podium finishes in 2023, 2024, and 2025 in succession. In a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview, he described what his first World Master medal meant: "I believe my first World Master medal was the most important for my career. It opened doors, took me to places I never imagined I would be, and gave me a different feeling: it was all worth it."

Fujita was 43 years old as of September 2026 and remains an active Masters division competitor with an explicit goal of capturing a world title. He frames that ongoing pursuit as a deliberate message to his students. In a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview, he said: "I didn't achieve it when I was younger, but I'm still trying after 40. I want to show my teammates and students that it is possible to build your own journey." He has also reflected on competing alongside athletes from diverse backgrounds and resources at major international events, concluding that the heart of the person who wants it more will ultimately make the difference.

Structuring Longevity in Competition

Fujita structures his personal training with deliberate attention to recovery and longevity. As of October 2026, his weekly regimen spans four days: two dedicated to technical review and two to physical preparation, with one additional competition-oriented performance session per week. Built-in rest intervals are a conscious feature of the plan, reflecting the physical demands of competing at the Masters level into one's forties.

When opportunities arise through his coaching and competitive activities in the United States, Fujita trains at the Renzo Gracie Academy's Blue Basement in New York, where he works alongside athletes including Rafael Natal and Thiago Saldanha. He also maintains attention to nutrition, acknowledging in a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview that dietary discipline is an ongoing effort rather than a perfected system.

The Value of Wearing Two Hats

Alongside his roles as competitor and professor, Fujita serves as an active IBJJF referee. In a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview, he outlined the practical value of the dual role: staying engaged as a referee keeps him continuously studying the rules, lends him greater authority when teaching those rules to students, helps prevent team losses that stem from rule misunderstandings, and keeps him connected to the largest BJJ organization in the world. The result is a coaching approach that is more technically complete and rule-literate than it would be through competition alone.

Fujita's most considered contribution to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may lie not in his competition record but in how he thinks about what the sport is actually for. In a 2026 Gracie Magazine interview, he challenged coaches to reconsider their definitions of success: "Precisamos como professores ressignificar como vemos os campeões... Uma relação de pai e filho que melhora... é uma vitória invisível, mas muito mais relevante que uma medalha de ouro." — "As professors we need to redefine how we see champions... A father–son relationship that improves... is an invisible victory, but far more relevant than a gold medal."

He describes these "invisible victories" — improved parent–child relationships, salvaged marriages, restored self-control, recovered self-esteem, and personal growth — as the outcomes he considers most significant, precisely because they receive no public recognition. A gold medal has a podium; a student who stops drinking, or a father who reconnects with his son, has none. Fujita argues that professors who understand this distinction will build something more durable than a trophy cabinet.

For aspiring coaches, his practical advice is concrete: learn to be understood by others, because the way one personally learned Jiu-Jitsu will not fit every student. He also urges Brazilian professors to learn English, citing the significant opportunities that remain inaccessible to those without it. For competitors, his message is about urgency: do not waste time, because the competitive years pass faster than they appear to.

Fujita defines his own vision of success in explicitly personal terms — a loving family, respectful children, friends who help without being asked, a warm embrace from one's spouse upon arriving home, and a good reputation in the community. He has summarized this outlook in a line that cuts across his roles as competitor, professor, and referee alike: "The most important applause already comes from the people we love. Now we just have to believe and keep moving forward."
