Building a Competitive Foundation
Riccardo's progression through the belt ranks reflected both competitive dedication and an unrelenting drive to seek out elite-level training. He validated his technical growth early, winning the Canadian Open as a blue belt in 2003 and the Copa Osvaldo Alves as a purple belt in 2004 — results that marked him as a practitioner serious about testing himself on the competition floor.
Determined to accelerate his development, Riccardo made regular trips to Alliance's headquarters in Atlanta, immersing himself among some of the sport's most accomplished competitors. These trips proved invaluable, both technically and relationally, forging connections that would shape his trajectory in the grappling world. Beginning in 2004, he also traveled frequently to Brazil, training at various academies and deepening his understanding of BJJ in its most competitive context.
The Atos Affiliation and a Historic Black Belt
In 2009, Riccardo joined Pura BJJ Academy, a move that proved pivotal to his development. When Pura BJJ affiliated with the Atos association — led by Guilherme Mendes and Rafael Mendes — in 2011, Riccardo found himself training under two of the most technically gifted and decorated competitors the sport has ever produced. In 2012, Guilherme Mendes and Rafael Mendes awarded Riccardo his black belt, making him the first person in history to receive a black belt from the celebrated duo. The distinction carries considerable weight in the BJJ community, as the Mendes Brothers are multiple-time world champions whose technical legacy and promotion standards are held in the highest regard.
