Renan Pegado was born on January 31, 1987, in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Raised by his mother, aunt, and grandmother following his parents' divorce, he grew up in a household shaped by resilience and family. His father, José "Netinho" Pegado, was a well-known boxer — a connection Renan would not rediscover until his teenage years. That eventual reunion reintroduced him to the world of combat sports and planted the seed of an athletic identity that would define his life.

At age 14, a friend brought Renan to the mats for the first time, marking his introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He began training at the Kimura camp in Natal under coach Jair Lourenço, whose structured instruction and competitive focus gave Renan the technical grounding he needed to take his first steps as a serious grappler.

The Kimura academy in Natal served as Renan Pegado's home base throughout his formative years, with Jair Lourenço guiding his technical and competitive growth. To supplement that foundation with elite-level exposure, Renan made regular trips to Rio de Janeiro to train alongside Andre Pederneiras and the Nova Uniao team — immersing himself in a high-performance environment that included notable athletes such as Jussier Formiga and Ronnys Markes.

This dual structure — rooted in Natal, sharpened in Rio — allowed Renan to develop his grappling game in parallel with the demands of his emerging MMA career. The investment paid a historic dividend in September 2011, when Andre Pederneiras awarded Renan his black belt. The occasion carried special significance: Renan became the 100th black belt conferred by Pederneiras, marking a milestone in Nova Uniao history. Before stepping onto the international MMA stage, Renan Pegado built his reputation as one of northeastern Brazil's most consistent competitive grapplers. He claimed the North/Northeast Interstate Championship in four consecutive years — 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 — a run of dominance that distinguished him from his regional peers. He also captured the Rio Grande do Norte State Championship, further cementing his standing as a premier competitor in his home state.

At the continental level, Renan tested himself against broader competition at the CBJJE Pan American Championship, earning a Bronze Medal in 2009.
