Foundational Mentorship and Dual Black Belt Credentials
Caruso's most significant formative influence came through his training under Osvaldo Alves, one of the foundational figures in Brazilian jiu-jitsu history. Under Alves, Caruso built the technical foundation that would eventually earn him the rank of coral belt — a distinction reflecting a lifetime of dedication to the art. Parallel to his BJJ development, he earned a judo black belt under Geraldo Bernardes, cementing his expertise across both disciplines.
Competitive Achievements in the 1980s
By 1984, Caruso had risen to brown belt level and demonstrated his competitive caliber by winning the Copa Vansport — a result that marked him as one of the standout competitors of his generation. His black belt promotion followed under Osvaldo Alves, and he further distinguished himself at the Copa Company, capturing the championship in the mid-1980s and establishing his reputation among the sport's top athletes of that era.
In 1989, Caruso completed a degree in physical education, a credential that directly informed his subsequent work as a coach and instructor. He returned to competition in 1996 at the inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, though an injury forced his withdrawal before he could compete to his full potential.
