The spark for BJJ arrived in early 1994, ignited by two watershed moments in Brazilian martial arts: the high-profile BJJ vs. Luta Livre challenge matches and the inaugural Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu national tournament held in 1993. Alongside his BJJ development, Marcos Escobar invested seriously in wrestling and judo, competing in both disciplines at a meaningful level throughout his formative years. In 1998, he took gold at the University Judo Games, demonstrating that his grappling skills translated effectively across rule sets. His arrival placed him at the frontier of the sport's global expansion, in a part of the world where structured instruction from a high-level practitioner remained a rarity.

Coaching, Competition, and Institutional Development

Escobar began his coaching work at Crush MMA Center before transitioning to Leverage Combat Academy, which serves as the headquarters of the MEBJJ Association in Asia. From that base, he built a sustained teaching presence that contributed directly to the institutionalization of BJJ across the region.

He did not step away from competition upon relocating. Representing his adopted country internationally, he placed third at the Brazilian Nationals in 2007 at the black belt level, and in 2009 earned second place in both the weight and absolute divisions at the Pan Asian International Championship — results that demonstrated his continued competitive relevance well into his teaching career. In late 2011, Marcos Escobar expanded his competitive ambitions by shifting focus toward a career in mixed martial arts. He began training under André Pederneiras and the Nova União team — one of Brazil's most storied MMA camps, with a long history of developing world-class fighters across multiple combat sports disciplines.

The transition was a natural evolution for an athlete whose background already encompassed submission grappling, wrestling, judo, and years of high-level BJJ competition. Adding striking and the broader tactical demands of MMA to his existing foundation drew on the full spectrum of his grappling expertise while opening a new competitive chapter.
