Salomão was a product of the Oswaldo Fadda lineage — a historically significant and often underappreciated branch of BJJ that developed independently of the Gracie family's more widely publicized academies. Rooted in Rio's northern districts, this lineage had quietly shaped jiu-jitsu for decades, placing a premium on technical depth and competitive excellence. Training under Salomão embedded Barreto within that tradition from the ground up.

On those same mats, Barreto trained alongside future notable practitioners Julio Cesar and Rafael Caldeira, forging relationships that would define his career long after his early years. His dedication and technical growth were swift and evident. Barreto ascended to become Salomão's most trusted student — his right-hand man in the day-to-day operation of the gym. That role granted him deep pedagogical insight and a profound sense of responsibility toward the lineage he was inheriting, shaping his development as both a competitor and a future instructor.

The year 1996 stands as the defining chapter of Marcos Barreto's competitive career. As organized international BJJ competition took formal shape, Barreto emerged as the dominant force in the rooster weight division, completing a remarkable triple crown that no competitor in his category had achieved before. He captured the Brazilian National Championship, then claimed the inaugural Pan American Championship title, and finally — most historically — won the very first World BJJ Championship (Mundial) in the Galo division, becoming the first-ever world champion at 57kg (126lbs) in the sport's history.

The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated. The 1996 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship was the foundational event of organized global BJJ competition, and Barreto's name was the first etched into its records at rooster weight. The death of Monir Salomão marked a profound turning point in Marcos Barreto's relationship with jiu-jitsu. The loss of the master who had guided him since 1978 — and whose lineage had shaped every dimension of his BJJ identity — led Barreto to step away from competition almost entirely. His withdrawal was not a retreat from the sport, but a reflection of how deeply personal the bond between student and master had been, and how irreplaceable that relationship was to his identity as a competitor.

Rather than abandoning jiu-jitsu, Barreto redirected his energy toward preserving and transmitting what Salomão had taught him. He established his own club in Vista Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, dedicating himself to teaching and ensuring that the Oswaldo Fadda tradition continued through a new generation of practitioners. In this role, Barreto became a guardian of a lineage that might otherwise have faded from institutional memory, embedding Salomão's technical and philosophical legacy into students who had never known the original master.

In time, Barreto reunited with longtime training partner Rafael Caldeira to co-found Equipe Supreme, a Rio de Janeiro-based team that formalized their shared commitment to the Fadda tradition. The founding of Equipe Supreme represents the culmination of Barreto's post-competition trajectory: from pioneering world champion, to devoted student, to instructor and team builder.
