Luciana Dias

Born on December 4, 1962, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Luciana "Luka" Tavares Dias relocated with her family to Teresópolis in 1975. From an early age, she was captivated by judo — though circumstances prevented her from training the sport as a child — and that fascination with the grappling arts never faded. It would ultimately define the course of her life.

In 1986 and 1987, while attending a physical education university in Rio de Janeiro, Luka finally stepped onto the mat. She took to grappling naturally, and it was not long before she added Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to her training. Her foundational BJJ development took place at Mestre Bitta's Pit Bull academy, where she built the technical base that would support her competitive career. She also trained with the Machado Brothers, deepening her understanding of the art. The speed of her progression was telling — she earned her blue belt within a single year, an early signal of the dedication and aptitude she would carry throughout her career.

After completing her university studies, Luka relocated to the United States, settling initially in Florida before returning to the mats in California, where she trained once more under the Machado Brothers. In California, she transitioned into an assistant coaching role alongside her continued training, and in 1998 she earned her purple belt — a milestone that marked her growing authority as both practitioner and instructor.

In 1999, Luka made another pivotal move to Arizona, where she joined the academy of Wellington Dias — known in the BJJ community as "Megaton" — under the banner of Gracie Humaitá. There, she devoted considerable energy to building and running youth programs and kids' classes, a contribution that would have lasting consequences for the next generation of grapplers. Her tenure at the academy culminated in one of the most memorable moments of her career: at the 2003 Pan American Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, she received her black belt in a ceremony conducted by both Wellington Dias and Royler Gracie — a recognition that reflected the depth of her technical development and her contributions to the academy.

Through the 2000s and into the 2010s, Luciana Dias established herself as one of the most accomplished female competitors of her generation in the Peso Médio division (69kg/152.5lbs). Her record at the Pan American Championship stands as a testament to her consistency at the highest level. She captured Pan American titles in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 — claiming both the weight and absolute titles that year — and again in 2009, assembling one of the most decorated Pan American records in women's BJJ history.

World Championship Performances and Masters Titles

At the IBJJF World Championships, Luka reached the final in both 2007 and 2009, demonstrating the kind of sustained elite performance that few competitors achieve across multiple years. She claimed gold at the World Masters Championship in 2014, adding a significant title to an already extensive collection, and earned International Masters and Seniors titles in 2007 in the absolute division and in 2011 in both the weight and absolute categories.

A Defining Measure: Defeating Gabrielle Garcia

Perhaps the most striking measure of Luka's competitive stature is her record against Gabrielle Garcia, widely regarded as one of the most dominant forces in the history of women's grappling. Luciana Dias defeated Garcia on three separate occasions — a feat that distinguishes her record and firmly underscores her position among the sport's elite female competitors.

Beyond her own competitive accomplishments, Luciana Dias holds a uniquely significant place in the development of Mackenzie Dern, one of the most celebrated female grapplers and mixed martial artists of her generation. Luka's relationship with Dern is both familial and professional — she is Mackenzie's stepmother as well as one of her primary coaches, a dual role that has shaped Dern's career in ways that extend well beyond the technical.

Luka's influence on Dern took root at Wellington Dias's Arizona academy, where Luka built and ran the kids' program through which the young Dern trained.
