Blue and Purple Belt: Building a Championship Foundation
Souza's trajectory through the belt system reads as a consistent upward march across jiu-jitsu's most competitive international stages. His elite potential first announced itself in 2017, when he claimed gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship at blue belt — a result that signaled a competitor ready to challenge at the sport's highest levels.
At purple belt, Souza continued building his résumé with authority. In 2018, he captured the IBJJF American Nationals title, and bronze-medal finishes at the 2018 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship and the 2018 IBJJF American Nationals further illustrated his podium consistency during that period. In 2020, he added both the IBJJF South American Championship and the CBJJ Sul Brasileiro to his collection, demonstrating the versatility to perform across different competitive environments and geographies.
Brown Belt and Black Belt: Cementing Elite Status
The brown belt years proved to be Souza's most prolific stretch of competition. In 2021, he claimed the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals title — one of the most prestigious domestic championships in the sport — before capping his pre-black belt career with gold at the IBJJF European Open in 2022, an international result that underscored his readiness for the sport's highest division.
His transition to black belt competition required no adjustment period. In 2023, Souza won the IBJJF Sul Brasileiro at black belt, confirming that the competitive edge built across his colored belt years had carried seamlessly into the sport's most demanding arena. The breadth of his accomplishments — spanning blue, purple, brown, and black belt across both IBJJF and CBJJ competition — establishes Souza as one of the more complete competitive profiles to emerge from the middleweight division in the early 2020s.
