In 2018, a honeymoon trip to Sydney, Australia, set in motion one of the most significant transitions of Lucas Sachs' career. What began as a personal milestone became the catalyst for a professional relocation, leading Sachs to join Gracie Humaitá and contribute to the growth of high-level BJJ instruction in the country.
The Connection That Made It Possible
The move came through Alex Prates, a former training partner at Sul Jiu-Jitsu and longtime friend. Prates invited Sachs to coach at the academy where UFC fighter Robert Whittaker trains. Prates serves as Whittaker's head grappling coach and promoted the former UFC Middleweight Champion to black belt in December 2020. Sachs contributes to the broader grappling culture and technical depth of that environment, working alongside Prates rather than serving as Whittaker's primary instructor.
Building a Coaching Legacy in Australia
Beyond that role, Sachs has established himself as a trusted grappling resource within Australia's competitive MMA scene, coaching notable fighters Jacob Malkoun and Isi Fitikefu. His move to the Southern Hemisphere represents a continuation of the Sul Jiu-Jitsu lineage's reach beyond Brazil, bringing decades of accumulated technical knowledge and competitive experience to a country whose combat sports community has grown considerably in stature on the world stage.
