Kristin Mikkelson was born on August 24, 1988, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where her formative years were defined by an active, physically expressive childhood. Her early pursuits — swimming, climbing, and backyard athleticism — built the body awareness and competitive instinct that would later translate seamlessly to the demands of martial arts.
Mikkelson's first serious martial discipline was taekwondo, which she began at age 12 at Bauer's Martial Arts Academy under instructor Fred Bauer. Though she never competed in the Korean striking art, her dedication was unambiguous: by 19, she had earned a 2nd degree black belt — a clear signal of her discipline and capacity for long-term commitment within a structured martial system.
Following her time in Cincinnati, Mikkelson pursued higher education at the University of Cincinnati, where she studied finance. That academic chapter would ultimately serve as the backdrop for one of the most defining decisions of her athletic career.
