Perretti's direct exposure to Brazilian jiu-jitsu came through one of grappling's most storied figures. Gene LeBell — the legendary catch wrestler and martial arts polymath — introduced Perretti to the Machado Academy, where he trained as a student and gained firsthand experience with BJJ on the mat.
The Machado Academy Incident
His time at the academy ended abruptly when he was told not to return. Perretti has discussed the episode as emblematic of the resistance he encountered from segments of the BJJ community during his years in early MMA. The falling out centered on a specific exchange with John Machado that Perretti has recounted in pointed terms — a dispute he frames as reflecting a deeper cultural friction between a BJJ establishment and the promoters working to build something new around it.
In his telling, the community "were incredibly fearful" of him, and the message was blunt: "Don't come back." Perretti has argued the resistance stemmed from a fundamental misreading of his intentions — that "the sport that I was creating wasn't for them" in the narrow, style-promotional sense some in the BJJ world assumed. A fuller account of the incident, including the circumstances of the phone call with John Machado that precipitated the final break, appears in his memoir, The Origin of a Species and Mixed Martial Arts.
