John Hearn

Before John "Jack" Hearn became one of the most celebrated martial arts educators in British history, he was a competitive cyclist — until an appendectomy in the late 1940s brought that chapter of his athletic life to an abrupt close. Rather than stepping away from physical discipline altogether, Hearn redirected his energy toward a martial art that would define the next seven decades of his life. He took up judo in 1951 and adapted to it with striking immediacy, described by those who knew him early as taking to the art "like a duck to water."

Hearn's path to the mat was shaped as much by military experience as by personal circumstance. He served as a sergeant in the Northumberland Fusiliers during the Second World War, deploying to North Africa and Italy through some of the conflict's most grueling campaigns — including the Battle of Monte Cassino, a protracted and costly engagement that left a lasting impression on those who survived it. The discipline, structure, and commitment to others that military service demands found a natural expression in his teaching philosophy. The transition from soldier to sensei was not a departure from his earlier life but a continuation of it, with Hearn's insistence on purposeful living and service to something larger than oneself drawing directly from those wartime years.

Just three years after picking up judo for the first time, Hearn co-founded a judo club in Cramlington, Northumberland alongside his brother Bob in 1954. What followed was a teaching career of almost incomprehensible duration — more than seventy years at the center of that club, guiding students through the fundamentals of judo and, by his own framing, through the fundamentals of living well.

The generational continuity of his student body stands as one of the most striking measures of his longevity. Hearn often noted that children he first taught as six-year-olds eventually returned to the mat — not as adult practitioners, but as grandparents bringing their own grandchildren to train. A third generation of the same families was in progress at the time of his death. No competition record or title haul captures what that continuity represents as a teaching achievement.

In 2020, Guinness World Records formally recognized Hearn as the world's oldest judo instructor, drawing national attention to a figure who had long been a quiet local institution. He wore the distinction lightly, expressing more surprise at his own continued vitality than pride in the record itself, remarking that he had never imagined still being on his feet at his age.

Adapting Without Retreating

As physical demonstration became less feasible in his later years, Hearn adapted without retreating. By age 100, as noted in a 2023 report, he had passed the responsibility for throwing demonstrations to younger instructors — his legs, he told The Chronicle that year, no longer permitting him to perform the techniques himself. His presence on the mat, however, remained active in every other sense. He continued attending clubs across Northumberland for lectures and examinations, serving as the resident authority his decades of mastery had made him. "If any clubs want me to go there to give lectures or examinations, that's what I do now," he said.

Hearn drew no distinction between boys and girls on his mats and consistently emphasized that the "real lesson" of judo extended well beyond any particular technique. His club culture reflected an inclusive, character-centered ethos that defined his instruction from its earliest days.

Hearn earned his Ninth Dan in judo in 2010 — one of the highest grades attainable in the art and a distinction held by only a small number of practitioners worldwide at any given time. In judo's ranking structure, the path from Ninth Dan to Tenth requires a minimum waiting period of a decade before a practitioner becomes eligible to sit the examination, a rule that reflects the gravity attached to that pinnacle grade.

Hearn spent years preparing for precisely that examination. Tenth Dan has been awarded to only a handful of judoka across the history of the art, and Hearn regarded the potential achievement as the crowning accomplishment of his martial arts life. His pursuit of continued rank advancement well into his late nineties and beyond was entirely consistent with the same refusal to accept diminishment that defined his teaching career. For Hearn, there was no point at which the work of a martial artist was complete.

For those who study grappling arts broadly, the parallel to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt system is instructive. Like BJJ's progression from white to coral and red belt, judo's dan ranking structure measures not only technical mastery but accumulated contribution to the art — years of teaching, examination, and service. Hearn's trajectory through that system illustrates what its upper ceiling looks like when a practitioner commits without reservation across an entire lifetime.

Across more than seven decades of teaching, Jack Hearn consistently framed judo not primarily as a combat discipline but as a framework for building a purposeful, character-driven life. The art, in his telling, was the vehicle; the destination was something more fundamental.

His most frequently cited personal maxim captured this orientation directly: "Make sure that every moment that you're here, you're doing something which was useful to yourself and to your fellow man, whatever age you are. Get off your boat and get out and do something." Hearn did not merely articulate this philosophy — he embodied it, remaining active on the mat and in club life past the age of 100, long after most practitioners of any art would have retired.

Hearn credited judo explicitly with sustaining his happiness and mental vitality into advanced age. "I like my life, it's a happy life, my mind is still full of judo," he said. When asked about retirement, his response was unambiguous: he would stop judo only "when they put the last nail down on the box." That statement proved more than rhetorical — his continued involvement with Cramlington's club held to that standard until his death.

His genuine surprise at the 2020 Guinness recognition was telling. Rather than positioning himself as an exceptional figure, Hearn emphasized that his longevity on the mat was a product of the art itself — of what judo, practiced with intention over a lifetime, makes possible for a person. The values he represented — self-improvement alongside technical mastery, inclusive instruction, and a view of the martial arts as a lifelong practice rather than a competitive phase — carry direct resonance with the educational philosophy at the roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Judo's foundational principles, transmitted through figures like Hearn across generations and geographies, form part of the broader grappling tradition to which BJJ belongs.

In May 2024, Hearn stood as the sole veteran representative at the 80th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Monte Cassino, joined on that occasion by the Duchess of Edinburgh. The moment placed him before a national audience not as a martial arts figure but as a living link to one of the Second World War's most significant engagements — a role he carried with the same understated dignity that had marked his decades on the mat.

In 2026, at age 102, Hearn received the British Empire Medal for his contributions to judo and to the Cramlington community, making him among the oldest honorees in the United Kingdom at the time of the award. The dual recognition — for military service and for a lifetime of martial arts education — reflected a life in which discipline, community, and physical culture had never been separable categories.

Hearn passed away in 2026 at the age of 103, leaving behind a club in Cramlington still operating on the foundations he and his brother Bob had laid in 1954, along with generations of students whose relationship to the mat — and to the values Hearn insisted the mat existed to teach — traces directly back to his instruction.

His legacy is not measured in competition results. It is measured in the unbroken continuity of families who trained under him across three generations, in a community shaped by his presence for over seventy years, and in a standard of teaching longevity that the Guinness World Records confirmed had no parallel anywhere in the world. For the broader martial arts community, and for those who understand grappling arts as practices built on long chains of teacher-to-student transmission, Hearn's trajectory represents a benchmark of what that transmission looks like at its most sustained.
