A Well-Established Partnership
By 2020, John Evans had developed a well-established working relationship with Spyder Korea built across four prior collaborations, making it one of the more consistent partnerships in his broadcast career. Through these engagements, Evans also cultivated a personal connection with Arny, the head of Spyder Korea, which included time spent training at the Spyder HQ training center. The professional and personal bonds formed over those years made what followed in 2020 particularly difficult.
The Dispute and Its Consequences
In May 2020, Spyder Korea invited Evans to commentate their upcoming tournament, scheduled for early to mid-July of that year — an assignment that would have marked his fifth collaboration with the organization. In preparation, Evans made substantial personal sacrifices, including leaving his job and investing in a new laptop to meet the demands of the role.
The tournament proceeded as scheduled on July 18, 2020, but Evans was uninvited from the commentating position at the last minute. His removal came without any opportunity to recoup the losses he had already incurred, leaving him with tangible financial and professional consequences. Evans publicly expressed hope that the decision had not been personally sanctioned by Arny, suggesting his belief that the dispute may have involved others within the organization rather than the individual with whom he had built a years-long working relationship.
