Finding His Foundation
João Pedro's early development was guided by a purple belt named Vitor, who coached him through the opening months of his training. That foundation led him to a more structured competitive environment when he joined the academy of Jonathas Couto, known in the community as "Monteirinho." Operating as a Gracie Barra affiliate, the academy became the setting for Somalia's belt progression — with Monteirinho awarding him his blue, purple, and brown belts, shaping the technical and competitive identity that would define his career.
In 2010, Monteirinho severed his affiliation with Gracie Barra and aligned his academy with Checkmat, one of the most decorated competitive teams in the sport. Somalia made the transition alongside his coach, continuing his development under the Checkmat banner.
Around this period, João Pedro also began training at the gym of Eduardo Conceição, known as "Jamelão" — widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors of the 1990s and early 2000s. The combination of Monteirinho's long-term mentorship and Jamelão's elite-level insight proved decisive in Somalia's development as a black belt candidate.
His colored belt résumé added considerable weight to that promotion. He captured the CBJJE World Championship at blue belt in 2009, the IBJJF World Championship at purple belt in 2011, and both the IBJJF World Championship and the CBJJE World Championship at brown belt in 2013 — a record that spoke to his consistency and technical depth across every stage of his progression. On August 1, 2013, Monteirinho and Jamelão jointly awarded João Pedro Rodrigues his black belt, a ceremony that reflected the collaborative investment both coaches had made in his growth.
