Constructing the Persona
Ahead of a 2025 NAGA jiu-jitsu tournament, Rodriguez built an elaborate fictional identity designed to unsettle opponents before a single match was contested. He listed Brazil as his location on his competition profile, used a profile photograph belonging to a legitimate black belt medalist, and walked onto the mat wearing a store-bought blue belt fitted with fabricated stripes — a rank he had never earned through any formal training. The resulting nickname, "The blue belt from Brazil," reflects this manufactured character in its entirety, bearing no connection to any genuine rank or nationality.
Competition and Public Fallout
Rodriguez entered the blue belt division at the 2025 NAGA event, competing in a bracket reported to contain approximately three to four competitors. The intimidation strategy, despite its elaborate construction, failed to produce its intended effect — a fact Rodriguez acknowledged openly in a public statement following the event. In that same admission, he confirmed what the persona had been designed to obscure: he is a white belt with no formal BJJ training behind him.
