Ian Behring's coaching career represents a deliberate and principled path shaped by the teaching philosophy inherited from his father and grandfather. Beginning in 2009 at the X-Gym in Rio de Janeiro, he developed his pedagogical approach under the direct influence of Sylvio Behring, establishing credibility as an instructor well before completing his own black belt journey.
In July 2013, Ian relocated to Porto Alegre, joining Sul Jiu Jitsu as an instructor — a move that marked a defining step in his independent coaching career and extended the Behring lineage into southern Brazil. That same year, he validated his technical breadth on the competitive stage by winning the Gaucho State Championship in the No-Gi absolute division, demonstrating that his skills translated equally well outside the gi.
Teaching as a Family Tradition
A particularly meaningful milestone came in January 2014, when Ian awarded his mother, Marcia Rego Monteiro, her BJJ black belt. The moment encapsulated the Behring family's relationship with the art — one in which Jiu-Jitsu is woven into the fabric of personal and familial life, and where the role of teacher is held with as much reverence as that of competitor. His sustained focus on instruction over competition remains a defining characteristic of his professional identity, channeling the family's long-held belief that the truest expression of Jiu-Jitsu lies in its transmission.
