Creel began his formal BJJ training around 2004 as a white belt at Gracie Barra Swansea, commuting two to three times per week despite the scarcity of clubs across Wales at the time. As he progressed, the pursuit of higher-level instruction led him and a training partner to travel approximately one hundred miles round trip to train under Carlos Lemos at his academy in Bristol. Though the instruction there was of a high standard, its self-defense orientation did not align with Creel's preference for a competition-focused environment, and he made the decision to switch academies at blue belt — a rank he had advanced to relatively quickly.
That switch brought him to Pedro Bessa's academy, where he trained continuously through at least July 2014. In December 2012, Pedro Bessa promoted Creel to black belt alongside Kevin Cox and Mark Tucker, making Creel one of Bessa's first black belts and, at that time, among the first BJJ black belts in Wales — a distinction he described in the 2014 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview as a reflection of the state of the art in the region.
Creel described the promotion as a genuine surprise. At brown belt, he had scaled back competition due to a combination of injuries, the demands of a young family, and full-time work commitments, and he had not anticipated the timing of his advancement. A particularly formative chapter of his development was his partnership with Kevin Cox, with whom he progressed through purple, brown, and black belt, sharing extensive mat time and a deep training bond across those years.
